Richard Minnitt with painting

Thank you for your interest in my artwork.  It is a wonderful privilege to share my expressions of diverse landscapes and natural wonders. As a child, my friends and I explored the hills, valleys, and waterways of the Witwatersrand in the Silverfields area, a rich experience that still lingers with me. Much of the inspiration for the current selection of paintings arose from the many days of fieldwork and geological mapping of rock formations in bushveld terrane across southern Africa.

It wasn’t until I retired from a career in academia in 2017 that I was able to give significant time and effort to artwork and painting. The use of a limited palette of acrylic paint and large brushes has resulted in an abstract landscape style that is common across the pieces I have created. The occasionally foreboding skies are balanced by the warmth of golden grasslands and hills.

I have been greatly inspired by the renowned Danish painter, Marie Louise Eriksen; www.MarieLouiseEriksen.com. The course by Marie Louise guides one into an artistic expression that is simple but powerful and allowed me to find a distinctive artistic voice and style. Besides the use of large brushes and a limited palette, the atmospheric appearance of my abstract landscape paintings is achieved through layering of muted tones and neutrals. The atmospheric style is characterized by recognizable colours and mark-making.
